The Happenings...

Well, we have had quite an adventurous journey thus far. Serendipity is quickly growing and quickly becoming known amongst people. This makes us extremely happy. We have attended two events/fairs in the past two months and they were both extremely wonderful opportunities. Our clientele is growing and customer orders are coming in. We have been blessed. Our very exciting news, was being part of the Styled by Africa (http://www.styledbyafrica.com/), Pop Up Garden Party. It was an awesome event where there were many of the well connected and influential Zimbabweans. It was a great place to get our name out in the public. So we are excited for the connections that were made there.

As 2012 draws to an end and we are preparing to enter into 2013, we are excited for all that this year has held and all that is still to come in 2013. We will be having our first give-away that will end off this year and take us in to the New Year. We are also hoping to have our first official intern starting with us mid to late January. These are exciting times!!

The beginning...

Serendipity is a small business that had its beginnings this November. The heart of the business is to provide employment for teens transitioning out of orphanages. The unemployment rate in Zimbabwe is 95%. With this number taken into consideration the heart of Serendipity is to combat and reduce that. However, the truly driving number is that 85% of teens that leave orphanages, within a year find themselves, begging or selling their bodies on the streets of Harare. This statistic is very real and evident around the city of Harare and is one that truly breaks my heart.

Being back in Zimbabwe and seeing the struggles that the young people I have grown to get to know over the years in the orphanages and their challenges in transitioning out of the homes and finding jobs, has been heart-wrenching. I began to feel stirred to find practical ways to assist my friends. I wasn’t truly sure how that would happen or what I could do. Then one day I bought a canvas and painted a small little something for our home, as well as a wooden palette. A friend of mine saw and asked if I would make some for her and she would pay. Thus began Serendipity. Serendipity means accidental fate. Although I don’t really believe in fate, I do believe that Jesus Christ has a plan and a purpose always. So although I sort of bumped into the opportunity of creating things for people to buy, I believe that the Lord knew that this would come about and that He went before me in preparing the way.

So began the small business called Serendipity. My hope and dream is that within the next few months we would be able to find investors in order to be able to start off with employing two teens from the homes that are about to transition out. As we venture out in this new small business, I truly hope that you will join with us in whichever way you can, especially partnering with us in prayer. This business is truly about combating the struggles that face young people within the nation of Zimbabwe, while being able to create crafts that bring great joy and happiness to the consumers of Serendipity’s products.
